2019 SFMSP Season Review
A special thank you must be extended out to every member of our organization for a successful 2019. We dealt with quite a few changes heading from 2018 into 2019 and had a lot of successes with some growing pains.
LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
⬆️ The number of teams between summer/fall/senior sessions went up from 140 teams in 2018 to 142 teams in 2019.
⬆️ The number of player waivers signed went up from 1,597 members in 2018 to 1,793 members in 2019.
⬆️ The number of teams that completely filled out waivers went up from 91% in 2018 to 98.7% in 2019.
⬆️ The number of players who played on two teams went up from 51 (3.5%) in 2018 to 151 (8.5%) in 2019.
⬇️ The number of teams that finished their summer session with a winning percentage over 67% went down from 24 teams in 2018 to just 9 teams in 2019.
⬇️ The number of teams that finished their summer session with a winning percentage under 33% also went down from 22 teams in 2018 to 17 teams in 2019.
⬇️ The number of forfeits across all nights went down from 48 forfeits in 2018 all the way down to just 15 forfeits in 2019.
⬇️ Our light bill went down 8.3% for the first time from $11,974.86 spent in 2018 down to $11,054.70 in 2019 despite having more games played under the lights.
The numbers show that our league got more competitively balanced in 2019. More games got played in 2019. More teams played in 2019. And overall participation level went up in 2019 compared to 2018.
These are things we hope to continue to improve on and will work towards building on this trend of growing mens slowpitch softball in the Sioux Falls area in 2020.
In 2020 we have filled the board vacancy with Brad Tyler who is stepping up to fill in the League Secretary role on the board. He will fill the board term through 2020. On top of his addition, the SFMSP Board has added new roles in the form of player representatives. Each player representative will have a voice on the board for their night and division of play.
The Board defined the duties of the new player rep positions.
- Must attend the night they represent regularly.
- In the event of inclement weather they should be at fields by 5:30 if possible to help assist any decisions.
- Help with any umpire/team or team/team disputes if available.
- Help with championship night.
- Board meetings are optional, with the exception of when the board decides which teams must move up, or grand exceptions to move down.
For the 2020 season the following player representative spots have been filled by the following people:
- Monday Lower Division: Justin Henning
- Monday Upper Division: Aaron Bakker
- Tuesday Lower Division: Robert Miles
- Tuesday Upper Division: Vacant (If you play Tuesday Upper and wish to fill this role please reach out to the board email@example.com)
- Wednesday Division: Nate Olson
- Thursday Division: Nate Zacher
- Thursday Senior Division: Dewey Boer

INTRODUCTION OF FRIDAY NIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD LEAGUE
In 2019 Friday nights was pretty empty at Harmodon Park. We are looking to change this for the 2020 season. You can read the full proposal here.
Mission: To provide session(s) of softball where the stakes are non-competitive that lowers the barrier of entry to the sport by giving a chance to players to be introduced to the sport.
- Get Friday night softball back for SFMSP at Harmodon Park.
- Provide a true recreational league.
- Find seven teams to start the league.

While it is our goal to improve the integrity and the quality of competition within our league, we understand that change is hard, and that it affects everyone differently. We have heard your concerns and are actively trying to enact changes that will allow the league to function better both competitively and financially. Please know that now, more than ever before, your thoughts, opinions, concerns and suggestions are being heard and considered. We ask you to continue this conversation by attending the scheduled managers meetings in 2020.
